Am i? Yes!

Inertia! It is a powerful force. We are all subject to it. It has been nearly four years since a post appeared on this blog! I am giving this blog another push and hope the momentum will move it forward.

We are in a new decade. There was even a movie made over this name -- 2010 Odyssey. 2010 brings changes, changes to program, changes to administration, changes to name, just to name a few.

Our MIS program is changing, the change to reflect the changes in the field. We are no longer subject to the vagaries of Computer Science department when it comes to getting the first programming course. Starting now you will not have to go through a gate controlled by another department, unless you choose it so. We have added two courses, Web Application Development  (MIS 431) and Project Management (MIS 437) to the choices. We have renamed and repurposed many of the existing courses.

We have a new department Chairperson. Dr. Qing Hu took over the chairman position on July 1, 2009. He is a professor of Information Systems. He gave up the warmth of Florida to savor the four seasons of Iowa! Since joining ISU, Dr. Hu has been busy establishing connections to the industry (recruiters) and alumini.

We are also changing the department name from LOMIS to Supply Chain and Information Systems. THat means from now on we are to be called Information Systems.

Starting this year (January 29, 2010) we will begin an informal advising session for all interested students (current majors and potential majors) at the Gerdin Cafe. This will be a once a month activity. Look for one or more IS faculty there.

So, lets get this ship moving again!

What am I?

Are MIS students disconnected from the main business student body? A comment relayed to me from another business student, a LOMIS department student (not MIS), makes this point. Why is it so? Is it the truth or a misconception? Reflect upon your behavior. Become more open and connected to the rest of the college and university. Show others how MIS can be useful. Set up a demo of a useful tool or application. For example, show how Google maps and Facebook can be combined to keep up with your friends! Show how a music played on the local radio station can be found on line for purchase. There are many such "automagic" stuff you can do. Use your strength to overcome any weakness.

General Questions or Comments

So, do you have a question or comment? Let's hear it.

Welcome to Am i? Yes!

So, what is "Am i? Yes!" blog? This is a place where the students and faculty of management information systems at Iowa State University can interact. Actually, we invite others to join as well. Do you have a question about the field of MIS? Do you have questions about the major at ISU? Do you want to know more about careers, classes, instructors, etc. Ask!
